Gowri, Krishna & Kapila: A Story of Trust, Love, and Becoming Family

Last October, we welcomed three new members to our farm. Among them was Gowri, a five-year-old cow who had struggled with birthing in the past. Along with her came two playful calves—Krishna, an eight-month-old male, and Kapila, a six-month-old female. Though born to different mothers, these two young ones quickly became part of our extended family.

In the past few months, they’ve truly made our farm their home. They’ve grown familiar with their surroundings, with us, and especially with Madesh, our dedicated caretaker. Every morning, Madesh opens the door to Nandi Gruha (नन्दि गृह, our cow shed), and out they go, eager to graze in the Areca plantation. By midday, they wander near the farmhouse for water, before heading to the Coconut and avocado plantation to continue their grazing adventure.

Initially, they were timid, keeping their distance from humans. Gowri, Kapila, and Krishna would often shy away, darting off whenever anyone approached. But over time, their wariness softened. They’ve grown to trust us, and now, they enjoy being patted and groomed—a simple yet profound sign of their comfort and trust.

Couple of days ago, the day after Sankranti, I noticed something beautiful: Gowri licking Kapila. This might seem ordinary at first, as cows often lick their newborn calves to nurture and bond with them. But Kapila isn’t Gowri’s biological calf. Witnessing this unexpected act of care was very interesting and moving at the same time.

Gowri had experienced several miscarriages in the past, which perhaps shaped her instinct to adopt and nurture Kapila. On her part, Kapila has embraced Gowri as a mother figure, never straying far from her side. The bond they’ve formed is heartwarming—a reminder that love and kindness transcend biological ties.

Nature, in its quiet, unassuming way, often reveals profound lessons. Gowri’s care for Kapila reminds us that compassion isn’t bound by limits; it can extend to anyone, anywhere. If we can learn from this gentle cow and embrace the same generosity of spirit, perhaps the world could be a kinder, more harmonious place for all.
